EDLD 5363 Week 5 5.6 Web Conference Reflections

Jo Ann Guido EDLD 5363 L20144319 Web Conference Reflections I attended the following Web Conferences June 4, 2012 5pm June 9, 2012 9am June 16, 2012 9am June 30, 2012 9am July 7, 2012 9am The first web conference was at the beginning of the class and it really focused on what we would be doing in the class. All of us were trying to understand what the class would be like and what we needed to do learn how to create a video. The first lesson was on our Personal Digital Story taken from still shots. Dr. Abernathy reviewed some of the details of the assignment. Video creation is not something I have done and I was looking forward to learning how to create videos. We were also told about the last three weeks of class and that we would be working in teams to complete a video The second web conference was during the second week of the class and this lesson focused on Podcast. I learned about Audacity and some of the things we needed to edit and how we needed to create our Podcast and upload it to. The web conference also dealt with Creative Commons and Copyright Information. I teach HTML and have a lesson on Copyright. I was very glad it was brought into this lesson as it is an extremely important thing to do and know. The last thing needed is to be sued by using someone work. The third web conference started us on our journey for the next three weeks. We had formed our teams and discussed what we needed to do and how we would go about doing it. At what point we needed to start what. We knew we would submit assignments and they would change each week as we progressed on our project. This week we were trying to get our arms around the skill set of the team. The class was starting to get very busy during this week. The fourth web conference was during the busiest week. This conference helped us understand that we would only submit a few things as we were right in the middle of production and editing. This was by far the busiest week for our team. The video was shot and the editing was started. We were grateful we did not have to submit a lot of things as we were working so hard to get things in just the right order. The fifth web conference

Class 4 Week 1 Assignment 1.1 The Script

Tomorrow is promised to no one. Every day needs to count and everyday needs to be exciting.  A recent trip to Europe created an entirely new understanding of just how exciting life is.  The beauty and preservation in Europe is what makes up a huge part of our universe.  My travels started off in Barcelona
Spain where I boarded a cruise ship. The first stop was Cannes France and the understanding of the Film
Festival.   Next was Monaco, with its beauty and unbelievable history.   Then onto Florence Italy and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  What a story on the creation of the structures.  Rome and Venice are the heart and history of Italy.  For Catholics, like myself I was able to gather and learn so much about our history. Greece being the next stop on this fabulous journey and what history and beauty it holds.  However, the last stop in Dubrovnik Croatia created a closer understanding of the people and their culture.  My European trip provided me with so much to consider and to realize just how important tomorrow really is.

Action Research --How classroom size affects the students ability to learn and to achieve the desired results for learning at that grade level

Developing an Action Research Plan
Action Research --How classroom size affects the students ability to learn and  to achieve the desired results for learning at that grade level
Note: Steps 1- 6 pertain to Conroe ISD. Steps 6-7 Pertain to National Data and Analyzing the two
OutcomesActivitiesResourses/Research Tools NeededResponsibility to Address ActivitiesBenchmarks/AssessmentRevisions to SIP/PIP bases on monitoring and assesments
Step 1-- Determine what the current class sizes are in grades 1-12Meet with curiculum director and counselor at each grade levelPermission from Principlas of each school to conduce interviewJo Ann GuidoCompleted by end of 2011-2012 - June 2012Currenty I do not have any revisions as I am in the creation of the project.  As I continue with the creation and move on the revisions will create themselves and I will make the changes.
Step 2 --Once the class size is determined then the achievement level for each class needs to be determinedGather the data for a three year period on the achievement level. Use three years to determine an average to work withObtaining access to the data from the PrincipalsJo Ann GuidoEnd of 2011-2012 school year - June 2012
Step 3 - How does Gender, race, social growth and subject matter affect the learning outcome with different class sizesGather the data concerning achievement for these areas. Use three years to determine an average to work with. Create the data separate from Step 2 and then merge Step 2 data and Step 3 data together to start to analyize and create a solution.Obtaining access to the data from the PrincipalsJo Ann GuidoEnd of 2011-2012 school year - June 2012
Step 4 --Interview teachers at each level for feedback on student achievement in various class sizesSet up interviews with each teacher to understand their class sturcture with different sizes.  How they alter their teaching structure based on class room size. How much is accomplished with each classroom size. How student behavior changes with classroom size.Access to teachers and acceptance of InterviewJo Ann GuidoEnd of 2011-2012 school year - June 2012
Step 5--Analyze Data- Class Size/Class AchievementThis step requires building spreadsheets and graphs to begin to determine how the two pieces of the data relate to each otherSpreadsheet softwareJo Ann GuidoEnd of June 2012
Step 6-- This step will be the beginning of actually determining how classroom size affects learning. All the data for Conroe ISD will have been gathered and organized into a format for analyzingCompare the learning achievement with the classroom size based on how the teacher has to adjust teaching with classroom size variation. Data that was gathered in Step 1-4Jo Ann GuidoJune- July 2012
Step 7 -- Steps 1-6 dealt with Conore ISD.  In this step analyzing the National recommendation for classroom size will be the goalOn line activity. Data should be available thru National School SitesInternet AccessJo Ann GuidoJuly - August 2012
Step 8-- Create comparison data to evaluate the Conroe ISD and National RecommendationBuild comparion spreadsheet for evaluationSpreadsheet softwareJo Ann GuidoAugust 2012
Step 9 -- Once Step 8 is created the recommendation for the school can be built for presentation.   Create presentation and reiview for PrincipalsSet up meeting to present data.  By now the 2012-2013 school year will be underway and the data will be focused on making changes for the the 2012-2014 school yearJo Ann GuidoSept - Nov 2012

Class 2 ------Week 2 Reflection

Week 2 reflection. This is the second week of this course and it is proving to be a very good course. I have been able to really look at different areas of inquiry and really think about what goes into school system success. I do not have a desire to become a principal. I want to be able to assist the principal in making the school a success and keeping moral up and students learning with excitement. I am looking forward to the rest of the class as I feel it is helping me to focus on areas I have not thought about.

How Educational Leaders might use Blogs

How Educational leaders might use blogs What comes to mind is to use Blogs for brainstorming. This is a great way for everyone involved to quickly post their idea and allow everyone else to see it. This will allow everyone involved to look at all the ideas and expand the thought pattern of whatever the ideas were about. It is another form of communication across distance and the communication is instant

What I have learned about Action Research

Action research moves us away from the standard learning which I view as memorization of facts. In the standard learning we are taught to memorize and know these facts. Many times we do need to do just that. As an example --- learn all 50 States. This is purely memorization. And yes you do need to know this. However, action research goes beyond this memorization and allows the student to look at all 50 States and analysis something about the State. An example would be to compare all the States in the Southeast with the States in the Southwest concerning the number of Students that go on to college. This would allow the student to gather information on this and then go further in depth as to why one area of the United States has more students entering college than another. Staying with the traditional learning would only have the student know the names of the States versus Action learning will allow the student to start to gather a larger picture and understand what needs to be looked at in order to determine why one area has more college students than another. With Action research one is able to think “outside the box” and explore beyond the traditional learning environment. By doing this more information is gathered and learned thereby allowing for change to be made based on the Inquiry that was created and results of this inquiry. Action Research can really help the student and faculty to move beyond the boundaries of learning that Traditional Research has created.

Web Conference Reflection

The web conference provded some good information. I especially liked the powerpoint presentation as it was the outline of the class. The one thing that I would have liked to have seen different is an outline sent to us before the conference and an opportunity for us to send in questions concerning what the subject is. That would give the instructor the ability to research the questions and provide feedback to us. This would make the web conference more productive and more information exchanged. I did not use my web camera but will consider it in the future. I did like seeing who was on the conference. Overall it was good and helped me a lot.

National Educational Technology Plan

Four areas are the focus of the plan:

·         Be clear about the outcomes we seek.
·         Collaborate to redesign structures and processes for effectiveness, efficiency, and flexibility.
·         Continually monitor and measure our performance.
·         Hold ourselves accountable for progress and results every step of the way
President Obama has recognized that the United States is no longer the leader in College Graduates and by the year 2020 his vision is that the United States will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the World. Learning through Technology will be accomplished by understanding how people learn, personalizing their learning, having a universal design for learning, allowing it to be formal and informal.  All learners will need to be engaged and empowered in their learning experiences which will prepare them to be creative and knowledgeable as we continue to move to a globally networked society. Assessing the new technology, learning will constantly change.  We will need to make sure we measure what is important understanding which would be the variables and have embedded measurements, which would be the constants with ongoing review.  Feedback needs to move into a real-time environment and we will need to continue to be persistent in our learning knowledge. We will need to leverage technology to assist in improving. Teachers will need to work together to empower each other to become highly effective .  Having a standardized  infrastructure  allowing access to new tools  will aide in cost efficiency.  This will improve learning while making more efficient use of resources. The challenges we will face are how to design and integrate a system that will allow us to have this ongoing highly productive learning experience and interaction with other learners

Conroe's E-rate and Technolgoy Information

Conroe’s percentage of economically disadvantaged is 32%. With this number our e-rate discount is 50%.  E-rate pays for Internet connectivity, which include telephone systems, routers, switches, maintenance and communications-related expenses.  With this discount we have been able to connect 100% of our classrooms to the Internet.  A total of 3,225 classrooms.  Thereby allow all 49,326 students to have Internet connection in their daily learning environment.  Our allotment for technology expenditures per student is $242.32.  With this money the district has been able to bring computers in the class room and other tablet technology Throughout the school year professional technology courses are made available during the Staff development days.  Various people are in charge of the trainings depending on the skill set.  The CTE directory – Gregg Shipp plays a major role in assessing the skills set needed by the teachers and assuring the training is offered.   Feedback is provided at each Staff development meeting on the previous training to ensure the goals were met.  This allows for changes to be made and new assessments to be put in place. Assessing the student learning with technology is performed by each Teacher on a individual basis with a set of guidelines provided by the CTE department.  This allows teachers to customize their students learning through the use of the technology that has been put in place and to allow for new technology to be introduced as the student masters the previous technology. The areas that are not covered such as Voice Mail, Personal Development training, Software, personal computers, fax machines, cameras are budgeted from our Technology Expenditures Budget which is -- $11,952,500.00.

Technology Assessments

As technology becomes part of our lives many things must be considered.  In order for students to learn and grow with Technology they must have the right tools and training.  This is nothing new in the world of Education.  What is new is the fact that Technology is such a young entity that many many of the educators have not grown up with technology and they are currently learning the skills.  The question arises --- how can the teachers teach this subject when they themselves do not know the answers.  Therefore the key thing we must realize is the teaching of technology is a learning skill for both the teachers and the students.  The teachers know the traditional way to teach therefore they do know most of the answers.  That is a key in this process.  What the teachers have to do is learn how to teach with the assistance of technology.  This sounds very easy, however my experience has taught me that some teachers are not interested in changing the way they teach.  They feel they should be able to teach the exact same way they have always taught.  Hence the problem.  Students of today are growing up with Technology and their leaning skills are being developed with these skills.  In many cases they have greater skills than the teachers.  When they are expected to learn in the traditional way  a problem is created.  The learning community will struggle with this until a generation of technology driven teachers have mastered the skill of technology based learning.
